Letting The Boats Go

Water Levels at Your Lake

A recent trip to Pick Wick Lake was nothing more that a disappointment. A fishing buddy had told me about the big bass he had caught on a Saturday, and I went Monday to check out the story about all the big fish. When I arrived at the lake all I saw was mud and boathouses sitting in mud. Some of my best fishing spots were not even in the water, the only thing I could think of is they are waiting for the water up North to come down, or looking for a lot of rain. I can honestly say I have never seen Pick Wick Lake that low in my life and have been going to Pick Wick since I was a kid.

I have a bunch of folks that want to go crappie fishing with me and I keep telling them no water at Pick Wick and the other lakes in Mississippi are either too full and they are letting water out fast.

ARKABUTLA is one of the lakes I am watching like a hawk still a little too high and is starting to warm up and another week or so might be right for crappie fishing. Grandfather use to say when the Dogwoods start to bloom you better be on the water. Arkabutla is the best at 218 and is not far from that.

This water level happens every year and it never fails I am up and writing about the levels. I think back about Sardis a few years ago the core of engineers let out too much water, waiting for the rain that we did not get that year and it killed a lot of fish. I got blasted for writing a negative report about Sardis but was all true and that is why the limit at Sardis is still at 15 per angler and must be 11 inches to keep. Arkabutla and Enid are both at 20 crappie and must be at least 12 inches. Tennessee I believe is 30 crappie and must be 11 inches. You can see the number say it all.

We poor anglers have no say in the water levels, but if I bought water front property at Pick Wick Lake and woke up and saw my boat or boathouse sitting in mud I can see somebody getting in court when I bought water front it better stay water front and not mud front. All of this has to effect the fish crappie/bass/catfish and I don't care what the core says.
